May 17th is Norway’s National Day, but unlike a lot of other countries this is not a celebration of their independence day, but rather the day on which they adopted their constitution in 1815, long before formal independence with the dissolution of the union with Sweden in 1905.
May 17th is an excuse for lots of people to don the Bunad, or national costume, and parade around the streets with children very much at the forefront of the celebrations. Many traditional foods are consumed and many a Norwegian will also consume copious quantities of beer on this national holiday.
Bergen is no exception to this and is, in many ways, at the centre of the celebrations. The following are a few shots of May 17th in Bergen…

Thanks Dana. The costumes are great and the last two are Sami national dress. Hot dogs are omnipresent in Norway 🙂
